Corner Canyon High School Boys Lacrosse
The Chargers Story
In the fall of 1994, the Utah Lacrosse Association (ULA) was founded and conducted the inaugural season for the Utah High School Lacrosse League. The league consisted of 5 teams: Alta, Park City, Provo (Orem and Timpview), Sunnyside (Judge Memorial Catholic, and Roland Hall, Brighton, and East), and The Waterford School. Sunnyside defeated The Waterford School in a fall championship game and captured the 1st recognized State Championship.
Alta and Park City are the only programs to participate as stand-alone programs every year organized lacrosse has been played in the state of Utah. In the 2013-2014 school year Alta would split their boundaries and a new school in Draper would be created to handle the rapid growth pushing towards the point of the mountain.
Corner Canyon High School was established in the 2013-2014 school year and was a founding member of the new Utah High School Lacrosse League (UHSLL) that in 2014-2015 merged with the Utah Lacrosse Association (ULA) to form the unified UHSLL league.
The first Head Coach of Corner Canyon was Mark Davis. CC lost in the UHSLL State Championship to Brighton in their first year of lacrosse, but in the following year 2014-2015 went on to a 21-1 record and a State Championship win versus Park City (9-8) in what is regarded, to date, as the greatest High School lacrosse game ever played in Utah.
In the 2017-2018 school year Aaron Ika took over the reigns from Mark Davis to continue to build on what Coach Davis created at CC. Coach Ika is only the second Head Coach in school history, promoted from the CC JV Head Coach position after 2 years and starting his coaching career in the Herriman program.
In the 2019-2020 school year Corner Canyon joined 38 other programs from the state of Utah in the first year of sanctioned lacrosse under the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). Unfortunately, the season was cut short due to COVID-19 after 3 games, but the Corner Canyon program stayed strong during the lockdown period and eventually came back onto the fields and played 7 additional games in the spring/summer in a club format. These were some of the only games played in the entire country. By the start of the 2021-2022 season, the state of Utah had grown to 58 sanctioned Varsity teams.
In 2020-2021 Corner Canyon became the first Sanctioned Utah Boys High School Champion winning the Class A (Top 16 teams in Utah) title game 20-13 over Park City and finished the season perfect for the first time in school history at 22-0. In 2021-2022, Corner Canyon again took home the State Championship. This time in the newly formed classification format with a 15-10 win vs American Fork in the 6A title game capping a 19-1 season that included out of state games for the first time since before the pandemic. What has been called the greatest team in Utah history finished undefeated in state and 3-1 out of state which included wins vs the #1 ranked team in Colorado (Cherry Creek) and California (Mater Dei) at the time, with the only loss coming in 2OT’s vs the eventual #1 team and State Champion in California, Corona Del Mar.
From 2013-2014 to 2021-2022, in 9 seasons the Varsity program has amassed a 123-32 record (.794 winning percentage). In the 8 years of competing in the Utah State Playoff Tournaments, Corner Canyon has 3 State Championship in 4 Finals appearances, 6 Semi-Finals appearances, and 8 Quarter-Final appearances.
